Assault on a Glass Door

There’s a caller come a knocking

He’s rapping at your door

Through the glass you see him

A blur and nothing more

A streak of red announces

The attack begins anew

A trumpeting proclaims him

This battle is not through

With pride and pomp abounding

This visitor puffs his chest

His jabbing strikes continue

Pray your glass will stand the test

You can try to scare him off

Stop his pounding at your door

But he’s gone before you get there

And he’ll return when you’re no more

You can see him, you can hear him

Every strike that hits your pane

But to catch this little fellow

Is a hope wished just in vain

Mr. Poe may fear the raven

With its dreadful gruesome call

But for me I dread the cardinal

He’s a nuisance and that is all

Elizabeth is a 3rd year English Major from Madison, Georgia. Elizabeth grew up in a rural area, and learned from an early age to use books and words to experience the world beyond her reach. As an English major she has always believed firmly in the importance of literature. However, it was not until recently that she began using words to express her own thoughts and experiences. She is new to the writing world and hopes that others will enjoy reading her work as much as she enjoyed writing it.
